The UC Berkeley Art Exercise Department offers an undergraduate programme in studio art which provides a house grounding in basic techniques and principles while encouraging guided experimentation. Our curriculum is designed to teach students to think visually and develop a creative intelligence through the disciplined practice of art.

We provide technical and conceptual preparation in most traditional and new media: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture (wood, metal, ceramic, and mixed media), digital photography, installation, performance, social practice, video, sound, animation, and game blueprint. Fine art Majors are expected to round out the required studio courses with Fine art History and theory classes. Each semester the Honors Studio Program awards studios to nine senior Art Practise majors who show infrequent delivery and promise.

The Art Do Department seeks to graduate students who demonstrate an original vision in their approach to practice, form, and content and who have the potential for pregnant creative and cultural touch on. Successful Art Practice graduates empathise the professional person art earth and are clear nigh their work. They are deeply engaged with their fine art forms, rigorously committed to their arts and crafts, and interdisciplinary in their media, methods, and artistic enquiry. Students graduating with a major in Art Practice go on to pursue careers in a host of creative fields, including every bit professional artists, art directors, arts educators, and arts-related jobs with museums, galleries, arts management, pattern firms, publishing, and artists' organizations.

Curriculum

The UC Berkeley Section of Art Practice offers an undergraduate programme in studio fine art which provides a firm grounding in basic techniques and principles while encouraging guided experimentation. All the courses nosotros offer in a given semester are listed at guide.berkeley.edu.

By the completion of their degree, students will have acquired:

• Excellent creative research and visual advice skills

• Art exercise skills in a broad range of media and disciplines

• Solid vocabulary for understanding, sharing, and discussing global arts and visual cultures

• Artistic language for personal expression with unique methods and aesthetics

• Chapters to piece of work collaboratively on creative projects

• Ability to express creative piece of work professionally through writing, reproduction, and curation

Art Practice Classes

While the undergraduate major is made up largely of Art Practice studio courses, it as well requires at least three courses in Art History. Our students are required to be broadly familiar with the aesthetic strategies that artists have devised to understand and invent their worlds, not just in the 20th and 21st centuries, simply across the history of human culture.

Field trips to area museums, galleries, and artists' studios provide an of import on-site learning tool, i which emphasizes the pedagogical primacy of directly contact with works of art.

Studio classes with frequent grouping critiques are designed to foster a supportive customs, productive contend, and collaborative thinking. Students are encouraged to be both open-minded and tough-minded: to look closely, think critically, and challenge assumptions.

Most upper-division studio courses involve an exhibition requirement when students are asked to consider questions of audience, context, site, and timing. Several gallery spaces, among them the Worth Ryder Art Gallery (located in the Architecture + Art Do Building) and Platform Art Space (Wurster Hall) offering exhibition venues.

Prerequisite Checklist:

• Must have an overall minimum GPA of 3.3

• Complete R&C (Reading & Comprehension) requirements

• Consummate or be enrolled in two studio courses: Art 8 (required)  and one other lower partitioning studio fine art grade (taken at either UC Berkeley or a community college).

• Complete i lower division Art History course (any)

3. Copy of all previous college transcripts (if a transfer student)

4. Statement of intent addressing the following two questions

All materials including the portfolio are reviewed once per semester. Students can apply to declare an Fine art Major at any time in their educatee career.

BA Resource for Transfer Students

Transfer students from Community Colleges form a cadre function of the BA program.

Transfer students form a cadre part of our BA programme. We welcome about xx transfer students per year from Community Colleges and Inferior Colleges. Graduation requirements for transfer students are the same as for all other students.

Many of the lower-segmentation fine art courses transfer students have already completed tin be counted towards the BA degree. The student advisor helps transfer students become transfer credit for their coursework.

Declaring the Major is a requirement for enrolling in upper Partitioning courses. Transfer students are eligible to apply to declare the major in their starting time semester. Deadlines for declarations are in Oct and in February — please see the dates listed in the "Quick Links" sidebar. Transfer student portfolios often include work completed prior to arrival at UC Berkeley. Typically transfer students complete their BA degrees in 4 semesters.

BA Resources for Veterans

UC Berkeley welcomes and supports military machine veterans. CalVeterans is a support organization that helps veterans access their benefits as they pursue college education. It is staffed by Cal Alumni veterans who can guide applicants through the process of completing their degree at Cal. MFA alum and Art Practice staff member Ehren Tool is a veteran and key member of the Department.
